Covey of Quail

Updated: Jul 27, 2023

On June 3, 2023, we purchased a small covey of Celadon Quail which is a special variety of Coturnix Quail. With our 10 babies we were hoping for 6 hens... We were luck enough to have 7 hens and 3 roos. On July 12, 2023, our lovely girls laid their first blue speckled egg and the phrase "cute as buttons" has been said a lot.

Why quail? Quail are rapid producers, we had egg producing hens in 6 weeks. Chickens can take 4-6 months to lay their first eggs. You can have several generations of egg laying quail in the time that it takes for a chicken to produce its first egg.

We chose to give our quail an indoor / outdoor cage so they can live on the ground and forage. My wonderful Mom planted a little herb garden for them to play and eat in. However, they found it very tastey and we need to replant. To celebrate their outdoor release we watched them slowly go down the little ramp with wine and snacks. Yes we are those people.
